Hundreds of Injected Chickens Distributed in Depok
DEPOK – The Livestock Service Office of Depok city found hundreds of injected chicken carcasses in Kemiri Market, in Depok on Friday morning. Officers have confiscated one bucket of chicken offal that were being put in formalin. Head of the Livestock Service Office of Depok city, Deddy Supandji, said that his office have taken samples of the chicken meat, while confiscation will be done by the police. “For now, we only collected samples from the chicken. About confiscation, we leave it up to the police,” he said in Depok on Friday (12/9/2008).
The practice of injecting water into the meat of broiler chicken carcasses was known after livestock service officers noticed something strange on chicken carcasses sold by vendors in Kemiri Market, Depok. They found many lumps containing water and air on certain parts of the meat and visible injection marks on the meat surface. On one carcass there were at least four to five lumps and injection marks.
One of the chicken carcass vendors admitted that everyday there are at least 1,500 water injected-chicken carcasses sold. “We do it so the carcass would look fresh and attract customers,” said the vendor. (Bayu Adi Wicaksono/Global/ful)
