Dead Chicken Carcasses Sold in Markets
Serang - Dead chicken carcasses were widely sold in Serang district, Banten. Tuesday night (11/8), police raided a house in Songgon village, Cikande subdistrict, Serang that has been used to process dead chicken carcasses for the last three years. That night, police confiscated many dead chicken carcasses, turmeric water, and a bucket. The police also arrested Didin (45), owner of the place, and brought him to the Serang District Police Station.
Investigation started from several reports from citizens. The people were suspicious because chicken sold from that house was always far cheaper than market price.
With that information, police then investigated the case and finally searched Didin’s house. During the incident, Didin was putting dead chicken carcasses in turmeric water. Didin admitted to the police that he has been doing this business for three years.
He receives dead chickens from Misri, a citizen of Balaraja, Tangerang district, three times a week. A small size chicken would cost 1,500 rupiahs, while a large size dead chicken would cost 3,000 rupiahs.
Usually Didin processes the chickens at night. To eliminate offensive odors of decomposition, the chickens were submerged in water added with turmeric. After that, the carcasses were put in coolers filled with ice blocks, to make it look fresh.
The next day, the chickens would be sold in Cikande market. “Basically, put them in the turmeric water and ice overnight, and then sell them in Cikande market the next day,” he said.
One small size chicken would be sold for 5,000 rupiahs and a large size chicken would be sold for 8,000 rupiah. It is significantly cheaper compared to the market price of fresh chicken carcasses, which range from 23,000 to 25,000 rupiah per bird.
In one day, Didin could sell 25 to 30 dead chicken carcasses. The profit from selling those chickens is at least 90,000 rupiahs a day.
Even though he has been in the business for three years, Didin says he does not know from which farms the dead chickens come from. He has always been receiving supplies from Misri. Besides him, Misri also supplies dead chickens to a number of other vendors.
“As the suspect has said, there are other vendors selling dead chicken carcasses. We already have the identity of those vendors,” said Chief of Criminal Unit, Serang District Police, Commissioner Adjutant Sofwan Hermanto.
The District Police will continue investigation and apprehend all dead chicken sellers. This is to prevent further sale of dead chickens, moreover since public demand for chicken is always increasing. (NTA)
