The distribution chain of poultry and poultry products in Indonesia has several critical points for Avian Influenza (AI) virus spread. One of the points is poultry slaughterhouses (PSHs). Most PSHs in Indonesia does not meet the minimum standards for a slaughterhouse. On the other hand, most people are not interested to build a slaughterhouse that meets the standards because they see it as very expensive and not profitable. Therefore Center for Indonesian Veterinary Analytical Studies (CIVAS) in collaboration with TROBOS magazine created a public dialogue themed “A Poultry Slaughterhouse that Meets the Required Standards and is Profitable, What is it Like?” to give a solution for this issue. The dialogue was held on July 2nd, 2008, at the Jakarta Convention Center as part of the Indo Livestock Expo & Forum 2008.

The Indonesian Veterinary Student Association (IMAKAHI) in collaboration with Center for Indonesian Veterinary Analytical Studies (CIVAS) jointly organized the discussion with the focus on raising backyard poultry in residential areas in relation with avian influenza control. The speakers for this discussion were Dr Tri Satya Putri Naipospos (Chairman of CIVAS) and Dr Muladno (Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Bogor Agricultural University). The moderator for the discussion was Iwan Berri Prima (President of IMAKAHI). The discussion was officially opened by Dr I Wayan Teguh Wibawan (Vice Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine). It is expected that the discussion will lead to the solutions of mitigation avian influenza risk in Indonesia.
It seems that the handlings of bird flu problems in Indonesia are going for the better. This can be seen from the government’s commitment to create a National Committee for Avian Influenza Control and Influenza Pandemic Preparedness (Komnas FBPI) through the government’s decree (Peraturan Pemerintah) No. 07/Year 2006.
Bird flu is a zoonotic disease (an animal disease that can be transmitted to human or visa versa) which is the full responsibility of the veterinarian profession. This shows that handling of bird flu is part of the profession’s responsibility, but there still are some who do not have the same point of view, whether they are from veterinarians or veterinary students thus the appropriate format for bird flu mitigation efforts has not been formulated. Such condition serves as a main hindrance in the struggle to overcome bird flu. With the presence of this problem, IMAKAHI (Indonesian Veterinary Student Association) in collaboration with CIVAS (Center for Indonesia Veterinary Analytical Studies) conducted a discussion to search for the right format in handling bird flu.
