In West Jakarta, operations in Cengkareng Market and Pesing Market did not find any formalized intestines.
The operation was conducted simultaneously in all sites by teams from the municipal Livestock and Fishery Service Suboffice and the Veterinary Public Health Laboratory of the Marine and Agriculture Service Office.
Head of DKI Jakarta Marine and Agriculture Service Office, Ipih Ruyani, said that all formalized chicken intestines and formalin found in the operation was immediately confiscated from the owners and destroyed. “We have warned the offenders. If they are found to repeat the practice up to three times, we will legally prosecute them,” said Ipih.
The government is continuously educating and supervising chicken vendor, particularly those selling chicken intestines, in all regions. To monitor possible distribution of formalized chicken intestines, similar operations will be conducted in different markets.
Head of the Livestock and Fishery Service Subooffice of Central Jakarta, Widodo, said from all incidental inspections conducted in Central Jakarta, only now have they found formalized chicken intestine sold in markets.
This issue came up after police found 650 kilograms of formalized chicken intestines in a slaughterhouse in West Jakarta last Thursday. The product was sold in Tambora Market.

Caution
Consumers are advised to be more cautious in buying chicken intestines sold in markets. “Formalized chicken intestines have certain characteristics, the texture is rubbery, it is avoided by flies, there could be a strong formalin odor, and it will not spoil or decompose up to 3 days in room temperature,” said Widodo.
If consumers find chicken intestines with those characteristics or are doubtful, it is better to look for other options.
Similar characteristics could be found in other food products preserved using formalin, such as fish or processed meat. (ART)
