Flores Suitable for Pig Breeding Center
Kupang - Flores and Lembata Islands of East Nusa Tenggara are two areas free from classical swine fever or also known as hog cholera. Therefore, these areas are suitable to be pig breeding centers for eastern Indonesia.
In Indonesia, hog cholera free areas are Flores, for East Nusa Tenggara, and Lombok Island, for West Nusa Tenggara.
The pig population in Flores is very large, approximately 1 million pigs, which is about two thirds of the total pig population of East Nusa Tenggara.
“Therefore, Flores could become a pig breeding center and industry for eastern Indonesia,” said Advisor of the Swine Business and Farmer Association of East Nusa Tenggara, Maria Geong, on Friday (3/12/2010) from Ende, Flores. Maria said the largest pig breeding center in western Indonesia, in Bulan Island in Batam, which also exports to Singapore, Malaysia, and Hongkong, has been affected by hog cholera.
Maria recommends that Flores, as a hog cholera free area, should receive great concern from the provincial government of East Nusa Tenggara and its biosecurity protected.
The provincial government should be cautious in importing pigs from other areas, especially from areas that are not free from required animal diseases or are not recommended.
Maria also recommends quality improvement of pigs in Flores through artificial insemination from good quality pigs that are imported from hog cholera free areas. (Samuel Oktora)
