Consumption of Local Poultry Meat Very Low

Bandung - Consumption of local poultry meat in West Java is still very low. Each year, poultry only contributes 63.67% of all meat consumed. For local poultry the figure is only 8.87%.
Head of the Livestock Service Office of West Java, Koesmayadie T Padmadinata on Thursday (3/6) in Bandung said local poultry consumption is aimed to reach 25%. Low local poultry consumption was explained by the consumption of native chickens.
“Each year, only 31,000 tons of native chickens are consumed. It’s very far compared to commercial breeds, with 371,000 tons,” he said.

Koesmayadie said West Java is very potential as it has large stock of animal protein. The native chicken population in West Java in 2008 was 27.26 million birds or contributes to 9.5% of the national population.
“The count for 2009 has not been issued yet. The duck population in 2009 was 7.96 million birds or 21.88% of the national population,” he said.
General Chairman of the Indonesian Local Poultry Farmer Association, Ade M Zulkarnain said each year Indonesia consumes 2.1 million tons of meat and 60% of it is poultry. Even so, consumption of local poultry is still very low.
“Each year 1.4 million tons of poultry meat is consumed and 1.1 million tons of it is commercial breed chickens. It is really sad, native chicken consumption is only 300,000 tons,” he said. Ade also said that local poultry has to be the host in its own country, it must be improved.
Local poultry consumption must be improved; even so 100% consumption of local poultry is also impossible. “Because the technology in local poultry farms is not as advanced as modern operations and these modern operations usually grow commercial breeds,” he said.
If consumption is more than 25%, there will be overpopulation of local poultry and sale profits are predicted to decrease. Ade said, the price of native chickens at farmer level is Rp 25,000 per kilogram, or more expensive than commercial chickens which are priced at Rp 11,000 per kilogram. The price of native chickens in the market is even more expensive, Rp 45,000 per kilogram (bay).
