Scores of Chickens in Nunukan Suddenly Died
Nunukan – Tens of chicken suddenly died on Jl. Bhayangkara Gg. Flamboyan, RT 04, Nunukan Tengah administrative village, Nunukan, East Kalimantan. Avian Influenza (AI) is suspected to be the culprit.
Veterinarian from the Agriculture and Livestock Service Office of Nunukan, Rais, said that based on the symptoms, they suspect the chickens were infected by AI. Currently the office is still waiting for laboratory confirmation.
Symptoms of AI infection in chickens are similar to Newcastle Disease (ND). But ND only attacks the respiratory, nervous, and reproductive system.
“We suspect AI, but to be 100% sure we need laboratory confirmation. The kits we used are only for initial results. A confirmed positive requires laboratory testing,” he said.
In response to possible spread of the disease, the office is advising citizens to house their chickens. No chicken should be allowed to wander the neighborhood while laboratory testing is still not finished.
In the meantime, the Office is spraying chicken pens with disinfectants. Chickens are also given AI vaccination to prevent possible disease transmission to humans.
Rais said there is no need to panic and the public should entrust the case to the Service Office. (Tribunnews.com | Editor: Farid Assifa)
