Three People Killed by Rabies in Wajo
Sunday, 27 December 2015
Sengkang – Rabies incidences in Wajo District is still high. Data from Wajo District Health Services recorded 144 cases of human rabies exposure in 2015 with 3 fatalities. Ibrahim, Rabies Program Manager of Wajo District Health Services confirmed these incidences.
He explained that poor public awareness is one factor contributing to the high number of rabies incidences. Many people still disregard dog bites.
“Eighty eight percent of rabies incidences were caused by dog bites. That’s why I urge the public to immediately seek medical attention in community health centers (Puskesmas) or hospitals if you are bitten by a dog. Don’t ignore it,” said Ibrahim.
To educate the public on this disease, Health Services are visiting and giving socializations to subdistricts, especially those with high rabies incidences such as Tanasitolo and Maniangpajo. “We are always giving socializations,” Ibrahim stated.
Until now, 57 rabies suspect patients have sought post exposure vaccination. “Anybody bitten by a dog should immediately go to the nearest community health center to receive vaccination,” said Ibrahim.
Between 2012 and 2015, 10 cases of human rabies were recorded in Wajo district. Three of those cases were from this year. (Wa’nimbank)
