Friday, 12 December 2014
An anthrax outbreak has occurred in East Java. A number of livestock, cattle in particular, in Blitar District, were infected by anthrax and are dying.
When contacted, East Java Governor, Soekarwo, confirmed the incident. “Yes, it is true; however we have buried [the dead animals] 2.5 meters deep and have isolated [the area]. It was positive Anthrax,” he said to Lensa Indonesia on Friday (12/12/2014).
Reports state nine dairy cows owned by Yudiono, resident of Kendalrejo Village, Srengat Subdistrict, Blitar District, suddenly died one by one. Of 30 cows, 14 in the end died suddenly with unusual symptoms. Since the celebration of Eid al-Adha, these deaths have occurred repeatedly.
The most recent incident occurred in early December where 8 cows suddenly went rigid and died. Bloody discharge was released from the animal’s mouth, nose and rear.
News of Anthrax causing cattle death in Kendalrejo Village in Blitar has raised concern among farmers in other areas. Currently, all dead animals have been buried in a hole at least 2.5 meters deep after being treated with disinfectants and formaldehyde.
Meanwhile, Yudiono’s cow pen has been sterilized and the local Livestock Service Office has banned the use and sale of milk produced by any of the remaining animals. @sarifa
