Cattle Census Determines Food Independence

Friday, 24 June 2011

Jakarta – Results of the cattle and water buffalo census by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) per request of the Ministry of Agriculture, or also known as Beef-Dairy Cattle and Water Buffalo Data Collection (SPPK) 2011, holds a significant meaning. Because the census will determine whether Indonesia could achieve beef independence as targeted in 2014.

If the census finds the cattle and water buffalo population adequate, the government will stop importing feeder cattle. But, if it is insufficient, then the government will have to import.

This statement was released by Director of Livestock, Fishery, and Forestry Statistics of the BPS, Nyoto Widodo, on Thursday (23/6/2011) in Jakarta.

“Results of the cattle and water buffalo census will determine Indonesia’s independency against cattle import. So there are a lot of expectations, and it’s not only from the government,” said Nyoto.

Nyoto said another important result of the census is the national list of cattle owner and farmers. By Wednesday the census has recorded 5,361,094 cattle and water buffalo owners with an average of 2 animals.

“The list is important for program implementation, such as artificial insemination, farm productivity, etc,” said Nyoto.

Nyoto said the census was conducted by the Directorate General of Animal Husbandry and Health in collaboration with the BPS to answer any doubts on cattle security or beef self-sufficiency. Because so far there are many uncertainties regarding the beef-dairy cattle and water buffalo population in Indonesia.

“The data that has been used so far was data from the national livestock survey in 2008 and administrative reports from livestock offices throughout Indonesia. Animal inventory itself was first done by the government in 1967, but at that time not all animals were recorded, hence the result was not optimum,” said Nyoto.

Final data

Meanwhile, by 07:08 AM on Wednesday (22/6/2011) 71,490 of the 77,548 targeted villages, or 86.3%, has been recorded. The current data has recorded 11,926,677 beef cattle, 452,588 dairy cows, and 1,054,072 water buffalos. In total 13,433,337 animals. The remaining villages will be finished by the end of June.

Most of the animals were recorded in East Java with 4,186,181 heads, followed by Central Java with 2,089,965 heads, South Sulawesi with 852,513 heads, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) with 758,089 heads, West Java with 579,113 heads, and finally North Sumatera with 535,052.

The data will be compared with the 2010 data from the Directorate General of Animal Husbandry and Health, Ministry of Agriculture, which records the total cattle and water buffalo population at 16.1 million heads. Initial data of the 2011 census will be released in July by the BPS, while the final report to the Ministry of Agriculture will be submitted by the end of November 2011. The final report will provide complete analysis, such as the female – male breakdown, breed, bull-cow-calve, etc. (Suhartono | Hertanto Soebijoto)
