Two Bird Flu Patients in Sardjito Hospital Died

Thursday, 30 October 2014

Sardjito Hospital in Yogyakarta has done its best to treat the two bird flu patients. However, both patients, initials S and D, from Bantul who were confirmed positive for avian influenza eventually died.

Lung Consultant – Internal Medicine Specialist of Sardjito Hospital, Sumardi, said both bird flu patients in the hospital died on Saturday (25/10) last week.

Sumardi explained that both patients were treated in Melati 5 Isolation Room for a week. “Both bird flu patients died. Last Saturday. Last week,” said Sumardi on Thursday (30/10/2014).

Sumardi said bird flu cases are difficult and hard to treat. Besides the disease being deadly, patients are also late in seeking medical attention. These conditions worsen the chances of bird flu patients to survive. “Bird flu is very difficult. It is severe and sometimes they come in late. So most patients die,” he said.

The bird flu case involving two patients from Bantul received serious attention from Sardjito Hospital because of all the bird flu cases treated by the hospital, only one patient survived. “Only one patient survived in Yogya, all the others died. There is only one [recovered patient] in our records,” said Sumardi.

As previously informed, D was admitted on Wednesday, 8 October 2014, evening, while S has been treated in the hospital since early October. S was confirmed positive for avian influenza since she was admitted to the hospital. D was a neighbor of S.
