Feral Cat Sterilization

Monday, 30 March 2009

Last week CIVAS had participated in a feral cat sterilization (neuter) program held by Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN) at Sunter Kirana Market (Pasar Sunter Kirana) on March 26 and Perum Pura Bojong Gede on March 29, 2009. Two veterinarians from CIVAS, Erianto Nugroho, DVM, and Riana A Arief, DVM, were sent to aid in neutering the cats.

Most of the feral cats neutered in the program were captured and collected by JAAN’s local contacts. The cats were neutered and ear-tipped. Ear-tipping is a procedure of removing part of the ear (usually the tip of one ear).

The objective of this procedure is for easy and quick identification of the cat from afar. That way, people could easily recognize cats that have been neutered through this program.
Neutered cats were released once they have gained full consciousness and power. As much as 20 toms and 20 queens have been neutered at Sunter Kirana Market while in Perum Pura Bojong Gede 18 toms and 10 queens have been neutered.
