Feed Price Soaring, Duck Farmers in Gatak Bankrupt
Gatak (Espos) – Duck farmers in Kagokan village in Gatak sub-district complained about the increasing feed price. It has even caused bankruptcy to some farmers.
A number of farmers said that commercial feed price has already reached 233,500 rupiahs per sack; while several months ago it was only 190,000 rupiahs per sack. Local farmer, Joko Sutrisno, 30 years old, said that the increase in feed price was not followed by the duck egg price.
“Now the price is outrageous, one sack could reach 233,500 rupiahs. In Kartasura somebody sells it for 225,500 rupiahs a sack but it is very far and it is impossible for us to buy our feed there. Making things worse, the price for hatch eggs is also low,” said Joko in his house in Nyaen sub-village of Kagokan village on Monday (14/1).
According to Joko, the high feed price has caused bankruptcy to several farmers because the feed cost is higher than the income received from selling ducks and eggs. “What I know is that a neighbor of mine no longer farm ducks because of the high feed price,” said Joko who owns 510 ducks.
Another farmer from Krasak, Joko Santoso, said a similar thing. The increasing feed price is overwhelming farmers. Even Joko Santoso, who is Head of Krasak, Kagokan and Kuwojo sub-villages, is one of the many farmers who stopped farming ducks. “Since five months ago I no longer farm ducks because the feed price is too expensive,” he said in the local village hall. From his observation, there are at least 20 farmers in Krasak. Five among them have already closed their business. – alo
