Spreading of Avian Influenza Infection in Yogja and Central Java

TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta-Poultry deaths due to avian influenza virus spreading in number of areas in Yogyakarta and Central Java during early 2014. Head of section Veterinary information Balai Besar Veteriner, Wates Yogyakarta, Putut Purnomo said of spread the virus right now is new type, namely clade 2.3.2.

“A long time ago the virus will killing the ducks, but the virus were attacking to all types of poultry,” said Putut in Yogyakarta Wednesday March 5th, 2014. The first type of virus spreading in middle 2013. At the time ten thousand of ducks in Java and Sumatera died due to attacked with AI new varian. During early 2014, Balai Besar to make sure there were cases of poultry death due to AI clade 2.3.2 in Sleman and Kulon Progo. In Central Java, the positive cases of virus infection to variety of poultry occuring in Sragen, Semarang, Pekalongan, Brebes, Temanggung, Wonogiri, Magelang, and Boyolali. The cases were found during January and February 2014.

Finding the cases of this virus infection in Sleman were death of laying hens in Sariharjo, Ngaglik. Another cases were broiler death in Karangmalang, Depok. In Selomartani, Kalasan thousand of quail dead. Base on the sample, positive poultry with avian influenza infected clade 2.3.2. (Read: Avian influenza vaccine in ducks was ready to release).

Case of virus infection attacked the entog in Kulonprogo. Samples of poultry dead was examined in Balai Veteriner Laboratory from Pengasih Village, Pengasih. Last poultry death from Jetis, Bantul. Reported number of quail died suddenly. (Read: New Type of Avian Influenza Vaccine was Found).

“Tuesday ago the samples were sent to us and still examination the virus that was causes of dead,” he said. Putut said Balai Veteriner already confirmed to Department of Agriculture in Bantul about death cases suddenly in Wijirejo Village, Pandak. However, no sample shipment of poultry carcasses from the region.

The goverment has produced a vaccine for avian influenza clade 2.3.2 namely Afflu. However, many the duck farm were lazy giving the vaccine to their small animals. “Many the poultry death in large cage,” he said. Putut also accused the poultry market becomes new type AI transmission. “Many poultry market were dirty and muddy.”

Director of Biotechnology Study Center at Gadjah Mada University, Widya Asmara, suspect there was a weakness in implementation strategy of tackling process spreading the AI virus clade 2.3.2. “This was classic problem. The weakness in awarness and compliance of all parties (in the poultry sector),“ said Widya.
