Sudden Die-Off of Hundreds of Buffalos in Samosir

Friday, 16 December 2011

Medan – A total of 126 water buffaloes in Samosir district, North Sumatra, suddenly died. Hemorrhagic septicemia is suspected to cause the incident.

“For the last month, water buffaloes in Samosir district started to die. Based on information from Head of the Livestock Service Office of Samosir, the buffaloes suffered from Hemorrhagic septicemia,” said Chief of the Livestock and Fishery Division of PDI Perjuangan Party Regional Representative, Yantogah Damanik, on Friday (16/12/2011)

Yantogah said citizens are now waiting for the North Sumatra Provincial Government to respond to the outbreak. Dead buffaloes were found in Martoba, Sianjurmula-mula, and other villages in Samosir.

No apparent disease symptoms were apparent in the buffaloes. “In Samosir there are over 50 thousand water buffaloes, and the people are now asking the provincial government to take serious action,” he said.

”Less than 10 thousand buffaloes are vaccinated. Therefore, it’s time the Provincial Government of North Sumatra to work and overcome this problem,” said Yantogah.

Meanwhile, North Sumatra Regional Parliament member, Brilian Moktar said, now the provincial government has to deploy a team to investigate the incident in Samosir. “Emergency response from the provincial government is a must. We don’t want the problem to drag on and later burden the people,” he said. (tribunnews| ed. Glori K. Wadrianto)
