Balikpapan BPS will Census Cattle Population
Wednesday, 18 May 2011
Balikpapan- The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, will hold a cattle census. “The cattle census will be conducted simultaneously throughout Indonesia to measure regional cattle production capacity,” said Head of Balikpapan BPS, Joko Pitoyo, on Wednesday (18/5).
The census is held in preparation for the 2014 beef self-sufficiency in Indonesia. So far Indonesia is still importing beef.
The census will provide basic data on cattle population in Indonesia in general and a number of regions in particular. Especially for Balikpapan, data on the local beef demand will also be acquired. “This is more so because Balikpapan is a region that is supplied by other areas,” he said.
Joko explained that the targets of this census are beef cattle, dairy cattle, and water buffalo owners, cattle companies, and cattle traders in Balikpapan.
”The budget for this operation is 38 million rupiahs for Balikpapan city. There will be 30 people involved, comprising of Census Officers and subdistrict level Statistics Coordinators for 5 subdistricts,” Joko said. (Syahrul Karim/OL-04)
