Bogor, 30-31 July 2010

In anticipation of the National Work-Meeting of the Indonesian Veterinary Medical Association (IVMA) in October 2010 in Semarang city, ASLIQEWAN (Veterinary Medical Association for Wildlife, Aquatic, and Exotic Animals) held a “NATIONAL WORKSHOP AND SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE” on July 30 to 31, 2010, at CICO Resort in Cimahpar – Bogor. The event was held for internal consolidation of ASLIQEWAN and to increase the skills of members and participants through Continuing Education (CE).

The workshop was opened by ASLIQEWAN General Chairman, Dr. Muhammad Agil and attended by IVMA General Chairwoman, Dr. R.D. Wiwiek Bagja, and IVMA Organization Division Chairman, Dr. Wisnu Wardana. In her opening remark, Dr. Wiwiek talked about the IVMA, non-territorial organizations under the IVMA, and the preparedness of non-territorial organizations, such as ASLIQEWAN in standardizing wildlife-related veterinary competence. In this modern world, veterinarians, as professionals, must be able to compete with professionals from other countries; therefore the skills of veterinarians must always be increased. Such skills must be increased, evaluated, and certified. For the purpose of standardizing competence, the role of non-territorial organizations under the IVMA in accordance with their field of expertise becomes very important. ASLIQEWAN, as an interest and discipline-based organization, is expected to play that role for the development of the veterinary profession in wildlife, aquatic, and exotic animal medicine in Indonesia.

Continuing Education (CE) was also a main agenda in the event, Dr. S. Rotoro gave a course on Exotic Animal Clinical Medicine and Dr. Slamet Rahardjo gave a course on Reptile and Amphibian Clinical Medicine. There were also exercises with animals so participants could practice their skills. Several participants shared cases during this session. Case sharing is meant to broaden the perspective and increase the knowledge of participants, especially since people deal with a wide range of difference species, locations, and conditions.

The workshop was held for 2 days and was attended by 26 participants, ranging from veterinarians in small animal practices (private and animal hospital), animal rescue centers, elephant conservation centers, Natural Resources Conservation Agencies of the Ministry of Forestry, NGOs, and universities until independent wildlife veterinarians.

CIVAS, as an organization that is also concerned in wildlife health, sent two representatives to attend the event, Dr. Riana Aryani Arief and Dr. M.D. Winda Widyastuti. In a short session, CIVAS Executive Director, Dr. Albertus Teguh Muljono, socialized about veterinary medicine in conservation in Act No. 18/2009. With the following government regulation explaining Act No. 18/2009, which will also regulate veterinarians working in conservation, under development, the position and role of veterinarians will become clearer and protected by the law. Recommendations from ASLIQEWAN as the non-territorial professional organization for veterinarians involved in wildlife, aquatic, and exotic animals, is imperative to ensure the government regulation is on target.

The workshop was also held for internal consolidation of the organization. In the meeting, a new structure was selected to lead ASLIQEWAN for period 2010 – 2012. Selected as Chairman was Dr. Zulfi Arsan, as Secretary Dr. Andriansyah, and as Treasurer Dr. Rachmad Wahyudi. The work program of the new leadership is: 1. Consolidate Members and the Membership of ASLIQEWAN and strengthen the organization internally (ASLIQEWAN and IVMA); 2. Increase the capacity of veterinarians in Indonesia involved in Wildlife, Aquatic, and Exotica Animal medicine, particularly those that are members of ASLIQEWAN; and 3. Strengthen the organization externally. *** (Wnd, Rie)
