Anthrax Outbreak in Pinrang District, 33 Cattle Dead

Parepare— The death of 33 cattle from Anthrax in Pelita Hamlet, Malimpung Village, Patampanua Subdistrict, Pinrang District, South Sulawesi was declared as an outbreak.

The statement was released by a veterinarian from Pinrang District Agricultural and Livestock Services, I Gede Adika, DVM on Thursday (3/3/2016) when vaccinating and examining cattle in Pelita Hamlet.

“This incident is considered an outbreak because it is the first time Anthrax emerged in Pinrang District, killing 33 cattle and possibly putting thousands of cattle in two villages, Malimpung and Padang Loang, at risk,” said I Gede Adika.

Head of the Animal Health and Veterinary Division of Pinrang District Agricultural and Livestock Services, Haeriyah, said the office is vaccinating hundreds of cattle in both villages in Pinrang District this Thursday.

“Today we vaccinated hundreds of cattle in two villages, Malimpung and Padang Loang. All cattle in both villages have been exposed to the Anthrax bacteria,” said Haeriyah.

Pinrang District Agricultural and Livestock Services is vaccinating animals to prevent the bacteria from spreading to other cattle and humans. (Suddin Syamsuddin | ed: Farid Assifa)
