Jakarta – Hundreds of pigeons housed on the banks of Old Ciliwung River in Central Jakarta was secured from neighborhoods. The measure was taken to prevent possible spread of Avian Influenza in the neighborhoods.

Head of Marine, Agriculture and Food Security Services in Central Jakarta, Mulyadi, said 600 pigeons were secured. In addition, 60 chickens raised around the neighborhood were also destroyed.

“We also disciplined more than 150 poultry cages located along the river bank. As follow up, we will continue to coordinate with local village and subdistrict officials, if there is reoccurrence then we will discipline them again,” he said on Wednesday (18/11).

Removal of birds was conducted to prevent bird flu from spreading. The legal basis used was Regulation No. 4/2007 on Control of Poultry Breeding and Distribution. Meanwhile, Mami (60), resident of Kenari I Streat RT.15/03, Kenari Administrative Vilage, Senen Subdistrict, Central Jakarta supports government efforts in disciplining poultry cages. She said besides making the  neighborhood dirty, the birds could potentially become a source of Avian Influenza viruses.

“We really support, because we also have babies and children who could become infected with the virus. Although we’ve tried to remind them [bird owners], but they ignored us because we’re all residents,” she said. (Devi Lusianawati / Rio Sandiputra)
