Jakarta – A shocking discovery was made regarding cattle in Indonesia. Ten feedlots were suspected to have used beta agonist 2 drugs to fatten cattle.

The drug was added to feed to increase the growth rate of animals. However, these drugs are dangerous for animals, humans and the surrounding environment. The government has officially prohibited the use of these drugs.

Director General of Livestock and Animal Health Services of the Ministry of Agriculture, Ir. Syukur Iwantoro, MS, MBA, confirmed that regular government audit of the feedlot companies found positive use of beta agonist 2 drugs.

Some add it in starter, grower and finisher feed. “Based on the audit, we’ve asked them (feedlots) for clarification. Was the administration intentional or not?,” he said on Friday (29/5/2015).

To follow up, the government has asked cattle feedlot companies to sign several commitments. First, to no longer use prohibited drugs. Second, feedlots must have standard operating procedures for internal and external supervision. Any violation and the government will retract the companies permit, said Syukur.

The government prohibited the use of beta agonist 2 drugs because it is dangerous for food safety. “I won’t hesitate in dropping a penalty on them. If they are recalcitrant, we will close them down,” he said. However, Syukur admits there are several countries that allow the use of this drug. The reason is because the residue of certain veterinary drugs will disappear within a certain time after being consumed by animals. “We adopt a conservative stance, that’s why we prohibit beta agonist 2 drugs,” he said. Drugs within the beta agonist 2 group are Salbutamol, Clenbuterol, Albutamol, Salmoterol, Farmoterol, Cimaterol and Zilpaterol.

Prohibition of the drug is in effect with the publication of Directorate General of Livestock and Animal Health Services circulation letter No. 30059/HK.340/F/11/2011 on November 30, 2011, on the prohibition of distribution and use of beta agonist 2 drugs and its derivatives in Indonesia. The prohibition was based on Act No. 41 year 2014 on Animal Husbandry and Health. In Article 50 line 1 it states that all individuals are prohibited from using certain drugs in food animals intended for human consumption which result in residues in the animal’s products.

However, monitoring and surveillance conducted by the National Quality Control and Certification Laboratory for Animal Products (BPMSPH) on March 2015 still found feedlot companies using Clenbuterol/Salbutamol in their feed. The companies were PT. GPDM, PT. ISM, PT. LAL, PT. TUM, PT. EI, PT. NTF, PT. GGLCorporation, PT. CMT, PT. WMP and PT. RAI, located in North Sumatra, Lampung, Banten and West Java.
