West Kalimantan Province at Risk of Losing Rabies Free Status

PONTIANAK – Head of West Kalimantan Province Livestock and Animal Health Services, Abdul Manaf Mustafa, said the province’s rabies free status could be revoked of the rabies outbreak [in the province] could not be controlled within the next six month.
“If it could not be controlled in the next six month, the rabies free status will be removed,” said Manaf.
Field reports record 11 subdistricts in Melawi District have experienced rabies incidences with human involvement and death. Meanwhile, in Ketapang District there are five subdistricts with indications of rabies incidences.
“Hundreds of stray/feral dogs have been culled as prevention. People from the central government have also come to the site. West Kalimantan Health Services have received additional human rabies vaccine ampules and distributed those to community health centers in affected areas,” said Manaf.
