NEGARA, BALI – The mysterious disease affecting five children in Negara has been revealed. Three of the five children were positive for Japanese Encephalitis (JE) after tests were run at Bali Province Laboratory Center. The condition of all three children infected by JE has improved and they were discharged from Negara Regional Hospital separately in the last few days.

Negara Regional Hospital Director, dr. Made Dwipayana said JE was confirmed in three of five patients. The patients were I Ketut Andika Pratama (2 years old) from Medewi Village, Perkutatan Subdistrict, Ida Ayu Putu Candra Widiawati (1 year old) from Rukun Banjar, Gumbrih Village, Perkutatan Subdistrict, and Dika Pebri Setiawan (4 years old) from Bale Agung Banjar, Mendoyo Dangin Tukad Village, Medoyo Subidstrict. The patients were admitted on Sunday (11/1) and Monday (12/1). “Three [patients] were JE positive. This is in line with the suspect status and treatment given. All three has returned home,” said Dwipayana on Tuesday (27/1).

Dwipayana explained the JE patients were discharged on Saturday (24/1), Monday (26/1) and Wednesday (27/1). Meanwhile the illness suffered by the other two patients has yet been determined. Rahma Datul Aulia (7 years old) from Puana Banjar, Tegal Badeng Barat Village, Negara Subdistrict, who was recently referred to Sanglah Central Hospital, was confirmed to be JE negative. Meanwhile the other patient, Ni Putu Pebri Darmayanti (9 years old) from Wali Banjar, Yehembang Village, Mendoyo Subdistrict is still under intensive care. “The one in Sanglah was determined JE negative. Probably it’s still encephalitis, but it was not caused by JE. Meanwhile the other patient is still under our care, but we still don’t know or have received the test results. However, based to clinical signs present, we still give treatment for encephalitis and the patient’s condition has improved,” said Dwipayana.

Discharged JE patients are asked to continuously train their muscle movements. The training is necessary because muscles can become stiff after suffering from convulsions or lying unconscious in bed for a couple of days. “[The muscles] have to be exercised to become flexible again. Before [the patients] went home, we’ve trained them on ways to exercise the muscles,” said Dwipayana. He added, no new patient has been admitted with indications of suffering from the same disease. “So far we haven’t seen any. Hopefully nobody else contracted the disease. This is a lesson for us to always be aware of the health of our children and the environment, which is the source of this disease. Particularly in removing all mosquito breeding sites to prevent future illnesses,” he explained.
In Jembrana Regional Hospital, Pebri Damayanti has regained consciousness and no longer requires the assistance of a feeding tube. However, her body is still stiff and speech is still hindered. “Her conditions have improved since three days ago; the oxygen tube has been removed. The hospital says she can come home on the 31st,” said Pebri’s father, I Ketut Darna (42 years old).
