MALANG – Residents in Malang city, East Java, once again experienced a chikungunya outbreak. People in a number of subdistricts are slowly recovering from the disease.

Head of the Health Office of Malang City, Dr. Asih Tri Rachmi Nuswantari, in Malang on Thursday said measures have been taken to prevent further spread of chikungunya. All community health centers, including supporting centers, are on high alert. Mosquito fogging was also conducted in endemic areas.

“Fogging only kills adult mosquitoes, while larvaes still survive. Therefore people have to maintain sanitation, prevent puddles around the house from becoming mosquito-breeding grounds,” she said.

After a majority of residents in Tlogomas administrative village – Lowokwaru subdistrict and Bunul and Bandanwangi administrative villages in Blimbing subdistrict contracted chikungunya, now the disease has spread to residents in Purwodadi administrative village in Blimbing subdistrict.

Chief of RW (community unit) 4 Purwodadi administrative village, Hariyono, said chikungunya has infected residents in RT (neighborhood unit) 3, 4, 5 and 6. The disease emerged since the month of Ramadhan and continued to spread until now.

Hariyono said cases started on Sumpil 2 street in RT 5 and RT 6. It then spread to residents in Sumpil 1 street in RT 3 and RT 4. “Some people are still suffering from chikungunya and have yet recovered, that’s why there is fogging,” said Hariyono.

During the fasting month of Ramadhan, residents in several administrative villages in Malang city were infected by chikungunya. Although the city has conducted fogging, mosquito larvaes still survive. The disease has spread to other areas.

Symptoms of chikungunya are joint pain and weakness. Some patients even feel paralyzed and could not move for several days. General symptoms are headache, high fever and queasiness.

With treatment, joint pain in arms and legs are reduced. However the pain returns after the drug effects are gone. Full recovery requires on average 3 months.
