Bandung – Thousands of ducks in Bandung district, West Java, suddenly died; delivering a heavy economics blow to affected duck farmers.

One duck farmer in Cijagra Village, Paseh Subdistrict, Bandung District, on Saturday said no symptoms preceded the incident involving thousands of ducks. Avian influenza is suspected.

Didi said 1,500 ducks owned by a farmer died within 2 days. Some duck’s eyes turned white before dying.

Meanwhile Odas, another duck farmer, said farmers are very worried with possible avian influenza infection in Bandung District because thousands of birds could be affected (die) within a day.

Agus, member of Gumilang duck farmer group, said the local government service office provided him with some mitigation measures to implement when thousands of his ducks died from avian influenza.

One measure was to destroy the duck pens; however his pens were recently built. The pens cost over 20 million rupiahs.
