Avian Influenza In Human Found In West Lombok

Jakarta – The Directorate General of Disease Control and Environmental Health (P2PL) of the Indonesian Ministry of Health announce a case of human Avian Influenza (H5N1) infection in West Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB).
“The case has been confirmed positive by the Biomedical and Health Technology Center in the Health Research and Development Agency,” said Head of the Ministerial Public Communication Center, Murti Utami in a press conference in Jakarta on Monday.
The case was found in a 17 year old male, initialed D, who lives in Lingsar, West Lombok district, NTB province. The patient worked as a construction labor.
Murti said the case started on February 28, 2012, when D developed a fever. On March 1, 2012, D was taking medicine from Lingsar Community Health Center (Puskesmas) until at March 4, 2012, he was submitted for intensive care in Narmada Community Health Center.
On March 7, 2012, the patient was referred to Mataram Central General Hospital for better treatment. Unfortunately the patient’s condition continued to deteriorate and on March 9, 2012, he died at 23.50 WITA.
”Regarding this case, the Ministry of Health’s Integrated Team and local Health Service Office have conducted epidemiological investigation at the patient’s home and neighborhood. We found some risk factors, particularly environmental contact with dead poultry (chickens) around his house,” said Murti.
With this case, the total number of human Avian Influenza cases in Indonesia since 2005 is 188 cases with 156 fatalities.
Director General of P2PL of the Indonesian Ministry of Health, Tjandra Yoga Aditama, as the focal point for International Health Regulation (IHR), said Murti, has informed the World Health Organization (WHO). (A043 | Editor: Ella Syafputri)
