Palangkaraya – The price of broiler chicken and native chicken carcass in Palangkaraya city, Central Kalimantan, in the last two weeks went sky-rocket.

Broiler chicken carcass, which in a number of traditional markets was previously sold at Rp 22,000 per kilogram (kg), has jumped by 125 percent to Rp 30,000 per kg. Meanwhile, native chicken increased from Rp 35,000 per kg to Rp 50,000 per kg.

Survey in Kahayan market in Palangkaraya city, Tuesday (21/6) found vendors selling broiler chicken carcasses between Rp 30,000 per kg to Rp 31,000 per kg.

Rasid, on of the vendors, said they increased the price because their suppliers sold the birds to them at an increased price. Price increase from suppliers happened almost every day, some even up to Rp 2,000 per day per kg, while other Rp 1,000 per day.

”And when we sell it, we are forced to raise the price as the suppliers did. We think this raise is because the price of chicken feed is becoming more expensive, so in affect it raises the price of the chickens, besides farmers also said that other production costs have increased,” said Rasid.

Meanwhile, the increase in native chicken price is because the chickens have been scarce in the last month after an avian influenza outbreak hit Palangkaraya city and killed hundreds of native chickens.

“Therefore it is hard to get native chickens that are healthy and safe for us to sell, even if there are some, it is very expensive,” said Rasid.

Separately, Yatno, an animal feed merchant on Jalan Halmahera Palangkaraya admitted that since early June, chicken feed has increased per 100 kg sacks. Before the price was Rp 245,000 per sack, now it is Rp 285,000 per sack.

“Price started to rise since February this year, where each month there was an increase of Rp 10,000 per sack. We don’t know why this is happening, but the price from agents is definitely rising,” said Yatno. (Surya Sriyanti|OL-12)
