Bantul – Sudden chicken die off due to avian influenza is once again happening in a number of areas in Bantul District, Yogyakarta. Until February 2011, the Agriculture and Forestry Service Office of Bantul District has recorded 3 cases of mass poultry die-off due to avian influenza.

Head of the Animal Health Subdivision of the service office, Dr. Sri Budoyo, said they have received reports of poultry die-off in Kasihan and Sanden subdistricts. “From 3 cases confirmed AI positive, over 100 chickens had died,” said Sri Budoyo.

To anticipate further spread of the disease, officers have disinfected poultry markets and other potential facilities. “We are doing routine disinfectant spraying in poultry markets, animal pens, and slaughterhouses,” said Sri Budoyo.

In the last 2 years, the number of avian influenza cases in Bantul has experienced a decline. In 2009 there were 70 cases, in 2010 only 29 cases and now by February 2011 there is only 3 cases.

Even so, the public is still advised to remain vigilant. Cases of sudden poultry death should be reported to village officers or directly to the service office so officers could take immediate action. (K6-11 | Ed: A. Wisnubrata)
