Solo – The Agriculture Service Office of Solo city has activated their participatory disease surveillance response (PDSR) team to anticipate possible avian influenza outbreak in poultry and human.

The team consists of veterinarians and paramedics who visit villages twice a week to collect information on possible avian influenza symptoms in poultry and humans.

Last week 8 Bangkok chickens owned by a citizen in Kerten subvillage, Laweyan, Solo died from avian influenza. The disease was confirmed with rapid test.

Head of the Agriculture Service Office, Weni Ekayanti, said extreme weather could very much influence the emergence of avian influenza. The office, therefore, is strengthening monitoring of poultry markets in the region, the chicken market in Semanggi and bird market in Depok.

“So far we haven’t received any report of poultry or citizens exhibiting avian influenza symptoms,” said Weni on Monday (28/2/11).

The Agriculture Service Office of Sukoharjo district is temporarily banning poultry movement from and to Pengkol village, Nguter subdistrict after the death of 151 native chickens from avian influenza, confirmed with rapid test.

Head of the Service Office, Giyarti, said they are vaccinating remaining housed birds. But, the same could not be done for free-ranged chickens.

“We’ve vaccinated in the past, but immunity failed to develop. Therefore we advice poultry owners and farms to increase biosecurity,” said Giyarti.

In Klaten district, 100 citizens in RW2, Candirejo village were screened for influenza like illnesses. Previously native chickens were found dead in the village. Rapid test of chickens resulted positive for avian influenza.
Head of the Health Service Office of Klaten district, Ronny Roekminto, said that screening was particularly targeted for citizens exposed to dead chickens. “We are searching for early clinical symptoms, such as fever. So far nobody has developed any of the symptoms,” said Ronny. (Sri Rejeki | Ed. Aloysius Gonsaga Angi Ebo)
