Avian Influenza Outbreaks in Lampung

Bandar Lampung – Within the last two months, H5N1 avian influenza cases in poultry has experienced a sharp increase. Citizens are advised to be more cautious due to the quick spreading of this virus.

Head of the Animal Health and Veterinary Public Health Division of the Livestock and Animal Health Service Office of Lampung Province, Sunaryo Kasman, said the cases were found across 14 districts/municipalities in Lampung. Within the last month, cases of poultry die-off were found in Pringsewu district, Lampung Selatan district, Lampung Timur district, Pesawaran district, and the latest in Bandar Lampung city. Testing of samples confirmed the cause to be H5N1 virus.

Sunaryo said in February 2011 alone, there have been 25 cases of AI suspected sudden chicken death. In January there were 46 cases. “Cases of avian influenza increased sharply at the beginning of the year. It has been like this in the last 2 years,” he said.

Sunaryo said there the disease outbreak pattern for H5N1 in poultry has changed for the last 2 years. “Usually, we note increase in cases in the second 3 month period of May to July, now it happens at the start of the year. Probably it is influenced by extreme weather,” he said. (Yulvianus Harjono|Ed. Yuli)
