Thursday, 18 February 2010
Center for Indonesian Veterinary Analytical Studies(CIVAS) in collaboration with the Livestock Service Office of Sukabumi District and Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC) is conducting rabies education in schools and the hunting dog community in Jampang Tengah subdistrict, Sukabumi district. The program is for a year, starting from December 2009 until December 2010. Jampang Tengah subdistrict was targeted for the program because there were many cases of rabid dog biting and human victims in 2008. The program is expected to set Jampang Tengah subdistrict as a model for rabies mitigation in other subdistricts.
Target audiences of this program are 5th grade elementary school students, 8th grade junior high school students, 11th grade senior high school students, and the hunting dog community. Rabies education is given to school children in hope they will spread the information to other students and their environment. Children are relatively more open to information and critical to its environment, hence they would try to implement new things they have learned to their surroundings. The benefit of this program could not be seen instantaneously but better understanding is expected to improve the way people handle potentially rabies cases in the future. Meanwhile, rabies education for the hunting dog community is aimed to create awareness on the importance of giving rabies vaccination to their dogs.
There are 3 models for rabies education of school children. Model 1 receives only 1 session, model 2 receives 2 sessions, and model 3 will receive 3 sessions of rabies education. The media used is presentation, comic book, and rabies flash movie for elementary school students; and presentation, booklet, and rabies movie for junior high school and senior high school students. Meanwhile for the hunting dog community, there is only 1 model comprising of 2 sessions; 1 session with flip chart presentation and 1 session with rabies movie. So far, CIVAS has started rabies education in 4 elementary schools.
