Veterinary Epidemiology Training

The Veterinary Epidemiology Training was held by the Center for Indonesian Veterinary Analytical Studies (CIVAS) in collaboration with the Directorate of Animal Health and Directorate of Veterinary Public Health, Directorate General of Livestock, Republic of Indonesia. The training which lasted for 3 days was held at Kompleks Bumi, PMPSDMP (Pusat Manajemen Pengembangan Sumber Daya Manusia Pertanian), Ciawi – Bogor, from 29th until the 31st of May 2006.

Thirty eight (38) participants have been enlisted to follow the training and receive certificates. Majority of the participants were veterinarians from provincial and district livestock services offices in Indonesia. Other participants were veterinarians from the Directorate General of Livestock and several veterinary research institutes in Indonesia such as the veterinary research laboratory, disease investigation center and animal medicine quality control and certification laboratory. Besides governmental veterinarians (Ministry of Agriculture), five (5) participants were from private sectors such as from animal pharmaceutical companies, pig-breeding farms and from international laboratories owned by the United States of America.

The Veterinary Epidemiology Training which was a preliminary epidemiology training was officially opened on the first day of training, on May 29th 2006 at 08.30 WIB, by Dr. drh. H. Soehadji; former head of Directorate General of Livestock which is also one of the people in the Steering Committee of CIVAS. Also attending in the opening ceremony was the vice of the Director of Veterinary Public Health, Directorate General of Livestock, drh. Yudi Prastowo, and the Executive Director of CIVAS, drh. Albertus Teguh Muljono.

The training started at 08.30 WIB and ended at 17.00 WIB everyday. On day of training consists of four (4) material sessions followed by discussion at the end of each session which was guided by a moderator or directly by the speaker. In between material sessions, break times were provided to prevent boredom and maintain enthusiasm in participants to follow all the materials during training.
The first day of Veterinary Epidemiology Training presented Dr. drh. H. Soehadji with the material “National Animal Health System” in Session II. Teaching staff of Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Bogor Agricultural Institute, drh. R. Roso Soejoedono, MPH, DEA presented two (2) materials in the last two sessions of the first day which were “Definition, Scope, and Objectives of Epidemiology” and “Pattern of Disease”.

One of the founders of CIVAS who is also in the Directive Board of CIVAS, drh. Tri Satya Putri Naipospos, M.Phill, Ph.D., delivered two (2) materials in Session I and II of the second day of training. In Session I, she who is commonly called Ibu Tata presented a material called “Disease Parameter Measurement”, which is then continued by “Concepts of Contagious Animal Disease Control and Eradication and Early Warning System” in Session II after break. Session III and IV which was held after lunch presented a speaker who is an epidemiologist expert from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Gajah Mada University, Prof. Dr. drh. H. Bambang Sumiarto, SU, M.Sc. The material he presented in the last two sessions of the second day was “Sampling Techniques and Sample Size” and “Screening Test”.

On the third day of training, participants were still enthusiastic to follow the session which presented two (2) speakers. Ir. Etih Sudarnika, M.Si, teaching staff from Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Bogor Agricultural Institute who is an expert in biostatistics and epidemiology presented “Epidemiology Studies” in Session I and “Management of Epidemiological Data” in Session IV. In Session II and III, another expert in epidemiology from Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Gajah Mada University in Jogjakarta, Prof. drh. Setyawan Budiharta, MPH, Ph.D. was presented. He delivered “Outbreak Investigation” and “Epidemiology Surveillance” in the third day of training.

Overall, the Veterinary Epidemiology Training which was held in Aula A, Kompleks Bumi – and was still in one location with the lodgings of the participants – was successful until the closing ceremony at the last day of training, on May 31st, 2006 at 17.00 WIB. The training was officially closed by drh. Albertus Teguh Muljono, Executive Director of CIVAS, which was then continued with distribution of certificates and CDs containing the training materials, biodata of participants and biodata of speakers.

Based on the questionnaires given out to the participants, almost all of them expect a continuity of the training. Several themes recommended by the participants for the next training were advance epidemiology training with software application practices for epidemiological data, risk analysis training, pet and wild animal handling training, veterinary economy training, and strategic planning and Standard Operation Procedure (SOP) formulation training in regions in Indonesia. ***
